New magnetic plates helping to keep Learner and Provisional drivers safe.

Keeping young driver safe
Night driving for L and P plate drivers

Have you been in the car with your learner driver at night, going down the highway and had other drivers race up behind you, only to realise that you are travelling at 90 kph. Once they realise that you are travelling with a learner driver, they overtake.

As a learner driver, it is important that practice is gained on the road at night.  As a provisional or P plate driver, there are additional limitations in place to keep these drivers safe, such as restricting hours they are able to drive and the number of passengers they are able to carry.  All these measures are put in place to ensure young drivers are safe on the roads.

At night, how do other drivers know that there is a novice driver on the road?  This is my question.

This was a common occurrence for my son and I.  This prompted me to develop the only reflective magnet Learner and Provisional plates on the market today. These magnets are made from the same vinyl that street signs are made of.   They are highly reflective when illuminated. This helps other drivers at night see that a Learner or Provisional driver is operating the vehicle and to take appropriate caution, giving adequate room for both vehicles.

Clearly displaying L or P plates is important when travelling on the road.  Making the plates visible is even better.

We have recently completed this great new facility for the kids at Sussex Inlet using thermoplastic hot applied to the ground. This provides a longer lasting linemarking application compared to painting alone. The product is hot melted to the ground and anti skid, retroreflective beads are applied to provide grip and traction.

This product comes in a range of colours and is great for a number of applications where longevity is important such as carparks, walkways and even this Learn to Ride facility. Check out the photos at:   http://www.southcoastregister.com.au/story/4969017/new-learn-to-ride-park-a-hit-with-kids/

The benefit of Thermoplastic linemarking is that it is quick and easy to apply and can be driven on within minutes of application. Reducing down time in your busy carpark.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY SIGNS

Safety Signs are crucial in any work environment.

The main importance of getting the placement of your safety signs right is to remind employees of key factors in each area of the work environment and to prevent injury and ensure staff and visitors are well aware of the possible dangers and hazards ahead in certain situations and/or environments.

Without the use of signs as these gentle reminders, employees would lack the necessary direction in times of crisis, and employers might find themselves in significant legal difficulties if any accidents were to arise as a result.

By ensuring the workplace is sufficiently well sign posted, you can help protect your staff and visitors to the site, particularly members of the public, against the possible dangers that often can go unnoticed - leading to less industrial accidents and reduced risk to employees and passer by's.

At Illawarra Signs Company, we have the widest range of signs that can be made custom to your workplace needs.  This way you can ensure that you get to choose exactly what you need from to ensure you can create a safe, well identified work site.

Our signs are designed to meet Australian Standard 1319 which outlines specific parameters for safety signs in an occupational environment.  This standard sets out the requirements for the design and use of safety signs intended for use in the occupational environment.  These signs are designed to regulate and control safety related behaviour, to warn of hazards and to provide emergency information including fire protection information.  Give the team at Illawarra Signs a call on 02 4274 7452 to discuss your workplace signage needs.

Ideally, the workplace would be hazard-free and safe from potential injuries and accidents. However, many operations involve a certain amount of risk that cannot be controlled through engineering measures, administrative controls, or personal protective equipment. These situations require careful measures to prevent workplace accidents and injuries. The value of safety signs in these situations cannot be ignored.

Importance of colour in safety signs.
Colours can help employees quickly determine the type of hazard present in any given situation. The colour of the sign will also help them decide how to respond to and approach the situation. It's important to be consistent with your colour usage throughout the facility.

Red identifies FIRE, DANGER, or STOP. It is most commonly used in flammable liquid identification, emergency stop switches, and fire protection equipment. Danger indicates an immediately hazardous situation that could cause death or serious injury.

Yellow indicates WARNING and CAUTION. Yellow identifies hazardous equipment or situations. Common uses include marking machine hazards that pose cut, crush, or pinch injuries and for marking the insides of movable guards that allow access to gears, chains, and the like. Warning indicates a potentially hazardous situation that could result in death or serious injury.  Also used with black lettering, yellow identifies hazards such as conditions that might result in tripping or falling or flammable materials storage. Caution indicates a potentially hazardous situation that may result in moderate injury.

Green denotes SAFETY. Green identifies the location of safety equipment, material safety data sheets, emergency exits, assembly or muster points and first aid equipment.

Blue indicates MANDATORY AND NOTICE. It is the colour that identifies safety information signs, such as PPE requirements.  These are mandatory requirements.

Faded, damaged and dated safety signs can be putting your business at risk today.

The good news is it is surprisingly easy to fix.

One of the biggest tasks faced in ensuring good workplace, health and safety practice is the communication of information to keep employees and the public safe. It is vital that everyone concerned understands hazards and how they should be dealt with.  This then reduces the risk, making the workplace safer.  Too often we are call to a workplace, where signs are faded, damaged or no longer compliant.  It is unclear the message that is being conveyed.  This leaves the business and those around, at risk of injury or harm and litigation in the event an accident were to occur. It is for this reason, gettting your workplace safety signs right is essential. These signs should be found anywhere in which a potential hazard might be found, and the aim is to clearly indicate the danger so that it may be avoided. Other signs actually explain the precautions to take in order to avoid the hazard.  There are a great number of different signs in existence – many may only be found once in a specific location, but they are all important. These signs can convey a variety of meanings, because in many cases, the simple warning of danger is not adequate. The very best health and safety systems use a complete set of signs that not only help to prevent dangerous situations, but instruct workers in how to deal with them. For instance, a hazardous gas sign may be accompanied by an instruction to wear a gas mask. This is more effective than a lone warning symbol, which would not explain how to avoid the potential hazard.  This is not to say that signs should be solely relied upon.  There is no substitute for supervision, training, guards and other safety systems and procedures.   Signs are a great tool as a reminder.  That is why the majority of safety signs are simple graphics, they are easy to understand.

Now is the time to act to improve your safety signs today.  To save your business being at risk, email   sales@illawarrasigns.com   for your Safety Sign Audit Tool today.  This quick and simple tool, takes only a few minutes to complete but can save your business thousands in injuries and accidents.
