How often do car park lines need repainting?
There's no set number of years. Two car parks marked at the same time wear at different rates. It comes down to how the car park is used.
What wears lines out
- Traffic. The more cars in and out, the faster the lines go.
- Turning tyres. Entries, exits and tight corners wear first, because tyres twist on the paint.
- Sun and rain. Lines in full sun or on wet, low spots fade sooner.
- Oil, sweepers and pressure washing. Cleaning keeps a car park tidy, and it also wears the paint over time.
- The surface underneath. Paint holds best on sound asphalt or concrete. Cracked, crumbling or dusty surfaces let it go.
Signs it's time
- The edges of car spaces have gone soft or patchy.
- Arrows and give way lines at the entry are worn through.
- Drivers struggle to see the lines at night or in the rain.
- People park across two spaces, or cut through the walkway.
- The layout no longer suits how the car park is used.
New asphalt
New asphalt and concrete need at least 28 days to cure before we mark them, so the paint holds.
