Tactile indicators in Wollongong and the Illawarra

Tactile indicators are the raised dots and bars on the ground. People with low vision feel them underfoot or with a cane. We supply and fit them at stairs, ramps, crossings and building entries.

Black stick-down tactile tiles at the top and bottom of a set of stairs, with grip tape on the treads

Stick-down tactiles

Tiles that stick to the surface, peel-and-stick or stick-and-screw. We fit 300 by 300 mm and 300 by 600 mm tiles, in colours such as yellow and black. We also fit 316 stainless steel pads.

Drilled-in buttons

Individual stainless buttons, each one drilled into the surface and fixed on its own.

Dots and bars

Dots are warning tactiles. They tell someone to stop and check, at the top of stairs, at a ramp or before a road.

Bars are directional tactiles. They show which way to go.

The tactile standard, in plain words

AS/NZS 1428.4.1 is the standard for tactile indicators. It covers both types, and where they go at stairs, ramps, crossings and other hazards.

Where they go normally comes from the plans or your access consultant, and we fit what's on the plan. We don't check a site against the standard. If you need that done, your designer, certifier or access consultant is the one to ask.

Work we've done

  • 18 black peel-and-stick tiles at stairs at Stream Hill, with black grip tape on 10 stair treads.
  • Stainless steel tactile pads at a pram ramp at the University of Wollongong.
